East Terrace Continental (ETC) is one of Adelaide’s most iconic cafes. The heritage building, a former art studio, was recently updated with exposed brick walls and an upstairs bar and entertainment area that takes advantage of its prime location overlooking Rundle and Rymill parklands.

ETC provides a unique offering with delicious breakfasts and lunches, rich coffee and an extensive choice of wines, beers and spirits. In February to March each year, ETC becomes a focal venue with Adelaide’s Fringe Festival and Garden of Unearthly Delights across the road in Rymill Park.

But when owners Sam Izzo and Joel Bueti first took over the business in late 2015, they inherited an antiquated POS system that was very slow and cumbersome. There were long queues of customers waiting to place orders – frustrating for patrons and a restriction of access and movement for staff. “With the Adelaide Fringe Festival approaching, where we could jump from 200 customers a day to upward of 700, the system was simply unworkable,” explains Sam. “We had to have a system that enabled us to provide full service, including taking orders at the table”.  

To top it off, the incumbent POS system provided virtually no reporting, leaving Sam and Joel to run their business ‘blind’.

 “We made a decision to upgrade to a professional POS system and looked at the market. I heard about Redcat by word of mouth from a relative in Mt Gambier who was using it and who was very happy with the system. One of our wine reps said he had seen Redcat in a number of his clients’ restaurants, so we spoke with them and they provided very positive assessments of the product”, he said. “When we examined all the options, Redcat provided us with an excellent range of functionality, and a proven track record to support their products.”

There is no doubt that Redcat Polygon has made our business far more efficient, professional and enabled us to maximise profitability.
With the decision made, the pressure was now on to get the new system up and running before the imminent Adelaide Fringe Festival, giving ETC and Redcat just one week to get the system installed and up and running. 
 
Redcat rose to the challenge; “With such a short deadline Redcat staff worked tirelessly to have us up and running for the festival”, says Sam. 

The benefits derived from the system were immediate. Gone were the long queues. The reduced time taken to service customers enabled ETC to turn tables over more frequently and most importantly, the customer experience has been significantly improved.

“The system has given us far more control of our business,” says Sam. “For example, we can now manipulate our menu to maximise revenue by identifying and replacing slow selling items. We can also very easily implement the 10% surcharge on public holidays.”

Importantly, the system has enabled ETC to reduce the amount of staff on the floor and still maintain high standards of customer service. Sam sums up his delight with Redcat; “There is no doubt that Redcat Polygon has made our business far more efficient, professional and enabled us to maximise profitability.”
